Salvaged Chic Of The Week: Mad Men Desk

Saturday, August 18, 2012

This week's Salvaged Chic of the Week is the sophisticated Mad Men Desk.  Johnelle revamped this vintage beauty for a client. One of the many great things about this desk is that is can also be used as a vanity.  In a shared room, this stunner let's a masculine vibe play with your girly goodies that us ladies love to use. I love the shape of this desk.. it's sleek lines, tapered legs and capped feet all make it so sharp.

Johnelle also added vintage pulls that play off that mid-century love affair this piece has going for it!

Because of the sleek lines that these mid-century pieces have they're perfect for personalizing. Here you can see how styling a desk like this can create quite a punch!

Or how you can style a desk like this with eclectic selections of your favorite books, a collection of potted plants with bright colors and art for a more eclectic vibe.

  • A mid-century desk similar to our Mad Men one is also perfect for a very practical modern day office.  Mounting your computer on the wall is a perfect way to off set the more shallow    desk, using a laptop would also work well.

While this desk may not have been redesigned for this purpose, I love the idea of a vintage desk being the vanity in a bathroom. Not only does a desk give you ample space, but it also makes it possible for someone special to keep you company while you're in the bath...ha!

If you're not sure if a neutral vintage desk is right for you, these images clearly demonstrate how using a bright, or very modern, chair can change the look of your
desk to match your style accordingly.

Vintage desks are also perfect to double as vanities in your bedroom. Books or writing materials can quickly be moved aside for your favorite baubles and that perfect shade of red lipstick.

Television, magazines, or art are all great places to gather inspiration. Whether you find a color you're in love with, a style, or even just a feeling, they're all perfect jumping off points for the redesign of your new piece.  Feel free to email us at quotes@mignonnedecor.com to begin a dialogue.

Salvaged Chic Of The Week: Mid-Century Madness!

Thursday, December 8, 2011

For this week's Salvaged Chic Of The Week we've got a fabulous pair of chairs we recently reupholstered for a client. These stunning mid-century chairs were clearly lookers, but you couldn't see their true potential until they were recovered.

Our client picked this Italian wool fabric, which is a great design that represents the mid-century style in a modern way. The fabric will wear well, and won't show stains easily either because of it's pattern and thickness. Great choice!

A pair of mid-century chairs like these will be the perfect focal point in any space, regardless of your style.
The key is to have a mix of furniture styles so that your room doesn't look like a time capsule, that's why the design of these chairs is so perfect, she's made them her own!

When our client brought the chairs in to reupholster, she wanted to breathe fresh life into them, while still keeping the integrity of their mid-century design. One modification that Johnelle and she decided on, was to add a center button design to the backs of the chairs. This is something that we can always do! Adding piping, buttons or tufting are all ways to make a worn out chair look new and sophisticated once again.

For extra detailing we added a herringbone fabric for the piping. Another alteration we made was to add curved zippers on the cushions so that they could be removed and dry cleaned when needed. As with all of our upholstery projects we always Scotch Guard them to prolong their new life and to keep them looking their best!

Chairs like these will also cost a little less to recover than a whole chair. A tip to keep in mind when debating whether to get a piece reupholstered or not is to know that you can save money when your project doesn't need to have the foam or stuffing replaced. If you're just getting covers made you'll save even more! Reupholstering a piece can sometimes seem daunting, but the transformations are so extreme and can really transform an entire space with your newly revamped pieces.

mid-century moderne

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

let's talk 50s style ... at Mignonne we feature an eclectic assortment of furniture from all epochs ... and we love discovering 50s treasures to transform. It won't surprise you we like our moderne with a French flair ... which means maybe just a smidge of decoration here and there is tolerated!

In judging Mid-Century Modern pieces, remember that form follows function. You'll be watching for rectilinear lines .. long and low. Use of organic materials and shapes with little or no ornamentation. Remember ... this design period followed WWII and some of the resulting challenges included limited access to materials and required frugality. It was now important for pieces to be useful as well as decorative. Decadence wasn't always an option.

We're sharing some photos of French 50s modern credenzas, some gilded dining chairs with a bamboo motif, an example of French (gold paint, satiny fabric) meets 50s modern (use of organic theme and metal fabrication) ...

how about an over the top lighted French wall piece...how's THIS for a French starburst?!

Oh! and a fun, 50s modern chair you'll find on sale at Mignonne (now dubbed our 'skipper' chair for its coastal color and practicality). The aqua blue and white naugahyde accent the modern wood lines. This chair can go beach nautical or 50s modern ... your choice! Click our shop now icon in the sidebar to check it out!
