Holly Wach, Mignonne Featured Artist

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

We are so pleased to have the unique and feminine work of Holly Wach available at Mignonne!

Holly was born in St Louis, Missouri in 1971 and that is where the normal Mid-western upbringing ends. Her parents being restless souls moved around from town to town until settling in Stuart Florida. Her mom an artist and dad a storyteller created a household filled with creativity and tails of adventure. Her parents have now joined forces to craft a successful chain of children’s books. With the support of two such creative influences she couldn’t help dream of adventure and far away places.

Growing up in a quiet beach town supplied the perfect setting to sit back, dream and draw. After High school she was off. She traveled to Europe, South and Central America, Asia, and back. All the time she was filling journals with images and stories. She took a break from traveling to attend college at the University of North Florida. Where, she received her BFA in Painting. Then, she was off again until landing in New York City where she received her MFA in Painting at the New York Academy of Art. New York provided the opportunity to study under and view some of the most important figures in the contemporary art world. She has recently switched coasts to Oakland, California where she devotes all of her time to making art and exploring a new place.

We are featuring original works, prints and cards of images by Holly Wach. We have a selection from her "Ink Ladies" and "Lions" to choose from.

Her Ink Ladies images evoke another era of vintage erotica, tastefully rendered. The Ink Lions reflect the many sides of this magnificent 'king of the jungle'.

Stop by and check out these wonderful pieces for yourself.

Striking Art Piece by Millard Sheets, Collectible California Artist

Sunday, January 25, 2009

Millard Sheets (1907 - 1989) was a California painter, muralist and teacher. He was an important figure in the Southern California art scene for over 60 years. Millard was born in Pomona, California.

Sheets employed a number of media ... including watercolor and oil and was a muralist in fresco and tile. By the early 1930s, he was on his way to national recognition as an American artist. He exhibited works in Paris, New York, Pittsburgh, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and many other U.S. cities. He was recognized as the leading figure and driving force behind the California Style watercolor movement.

Sheets was a wartime artist correspondent for Life magazine in 1943, 1944 and traveled to China, Burma and India. His worldwide travel assignments (also Turkey, Russia, Hawaii) influenced his art in many ways.

Sheets was director of art at Scripps College and Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, California. While in Southern California, he was influential in developing the art scene. He participated in Franklin Roosevelt's Public Works of Art program as a member of the committee that directed the program's regional activities.

Mignonne is currently offering a framed print, "Three Gay Birds", by Millard Sheets. The print is approximately 23"X 28" and is nearly identical to the one pictured below. The print on offer at Mignonne has yellow tones versus the red depicted in the image below. Call us at the store or use the contact feature on this blog with inquiries.

Back in France!

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Hello readers! I'm back in France and finally getting re-adjusted to the time and the extreme cold! Winters are a bit harsh in my neck of the woods (la Dordogne) and we've been alternating between hard frost temperatures, gusty winds and cold, cold rain!

My french friends are bemoaning the length of time until Spring ... reminding me that it won't arrive before March or even April! Nonetheless, spring bulbs are raising their noggins and the flower shops are loaded with blooming pink hyacinths, which can be had for a song! In case you didn't know, their scent is heavenly and I will definitely be planting some in my garden for next year.

Soon I will be knocking about in search of treasures for my next shipment to Mignonne! If you've got some ideas, suggestions or requests ... note them in the comments and I'll keep an eye out. Hopefully they won't be of the large baroque armoire variety as I try to keep the treasures petite in consideration of shipping logistics!

Signing off with a big congrats to my fellow countrymen as we welcome in a wonderful new leader and a hopeful path for our nation!

Forward to Spring! le Printemps is on the way ...

Saturday, January 17, 2009

Anyone else getting the itch? Here at Mignonne we are already looking forward to spring and thinking of what's new and fresh in store for you.

One sweet and affordable item we've got in right now are herb potting kits. Eco-friendly, they are complete with local soil and seeds, dolled up in recyclable sturdy paper containers with the herb name printed in French. About this time of year we begin thinking of gardening and planting and getting outside. Since it is still a bit cold outside, these herb kits present a fun alternative. We've an assortment to pick from including Basil, Thyme, Sage, Cilantro and others. They will look charming on a window sill and also make a great little gift.

At $11 each and already giftwrapped, they are perfect as a present (especially when paired with The Green Book) or to group 2 or 3 as your own kitchen herb garden. Stop in and check them out!

Refurbished, why do we love thee? Let us count the ways!

Thursday, January 8, 2009

1. Refurbishing is a way to love mother earth. Extending the life of products already here can add up to less new items produced/required and less waste in a dump site. Households often throw out old furniture instead of seeking ways to reuse servicable items. Furniture is bulky waste and disposal to landfills represents a drain on resources.

2. Older furniture is often times of a higher quality, both the wood and the craftsmanship.

3. Refurbishing sustains vintage style and designs, allowing for continued enjoyment of classic looks and features. At Mignonne, we are always seeking ways to improve our 'green impact'. We are focused on using lower-impact products in our refurbishment process.

4. In these times of economic challenge, refurbished furniture and décor items make budget sense! Being more aware of your pocketbook and somewhat frugal doesn't have to mean sacrificing style and comfort in your home environment.

5. Refurbishing with Mignonne can be fun! If you have items you'd like to refresh, Johnelle can help you reveal your personal style with expert advice and customizing your pieces. We will consult with you on color and finish options, and even complete the project for you ... at a reasonable price.

6. Refurbished can encompass a wide variety of styles and looks. Refurbished doesn't always mean 'shabby' ... you can have a contemporary look, a mid-century modern style, European influences, rustic ... your imagination is the key!

7. Johnelle's art background and flair for design means you will always find a great assortment of fun and practical vintage pieces at Mignonne to complement your home. We concentrate on fresh colors and looks to spice things up, and affordably price our items.

Resolve to increase your personal 'reuse' commitment and improve or change your home design at the same time by selecting refurbished items versus new. Stop by Mignonne and see what a wide variety of options are in store for you!
